Summary: VES is looking for a Field Engineer to join our drill bits team in our Saudi Arabia, Dammam location. The Field Engineer will focus on serves as the liaison between sales and engineering in the field/office. Under general supervision, provides on-site supervision of drill bit processes, Field Engineer (Bit Runner) oversees critical bit runs and has responsibility for monitoring drill bit and BHA performance, advising on the correct drilling parameters throughout the bit run, and collecting data to enable further, more detailed analysis to be undertaken.        

The successful candidate will define quarterly and annual objectives that align with company, business unit, and function goals and specifies what is to be done at lower levels to achieve them. Applications apply strategic focus in line with our geographic and/ or customer focused coupled with differentiating VES within the sector due to being recognized as maximizing client value. Additionally be accountable in providing technical reactive support, operational recommendations, engineering engagement, operational processes and defining technical strategic focus supporting sales.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • In-depth product knowledge and basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Identify and describe the basic components of fixed cutter and roller cone bits, including different materials used.
  • Utilizes the IADC dull grading system, to identify possible solutions for each dull characteristic and recommend improved bit selection.
  • Explains the functions of a drilling rig's hydraulics equipment, defines the constraints on a drilling rig's hydraulics equipment, and identifies the relationships linking total flow area (TFA), bit pressure drop, and hydraulic horsepower.
  • Should be able to identify the basic heat-treating processes and describe the different fluid circulation systems.
  • Identifies correct bit types by the manufacturer based upon IADC codes and is able to identify possible solutions for improved bit selection and operating practices.
  • Knowledgeable about proper gauge, cutter layout, bit profile, and other design features.
  • Proficient in the use of drill bit software and can assist in providing advice and analysis to the client representative at the work site.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems and issues and determines solutions to meet customer expectations.
  • Provides engineering and sales with analysis, reports, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Aware of client requirements regarding drilling procedures.
  • Assist in the completion of all service tickets and relevant paperwork (well data spreadsheet, lesson learned/best practice, end-of-job customer survey, and key performance indicator (KPI forms).
  • Maintains records of all drill bit equipment at the well site including dimensional data and condition.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives as required by the Company.
  • Must possess communication skills, arithmetic, data entry, and recording skills.
  • This is a field Position; the Field engineer must adhere to all HSE requirements, promotes safety awareness and environmental consciousness, and complies will all applicable safety and environmental procedures and regulations.
  • Promotes and takes an active part in quality improvement processes.
  • Communicates occasionally with technical client personnel.
  • Assists in the delivery of product technical data packs, reports, product, and technical bulletins, and updates. Keeps abreast of competitor product developments.
  • Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors-Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science, Geology or other technical discipline preferred or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record with the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record in line with company requirements.
  • Understands the application of the product. Understands the key limitations and advantages of manufacturing the product in different manners. Understands the theoretical calculations as they apply to the design of the product.
  • General knowledge of typical discipline-specific drawings and documents, their content, and how they relate to each other.
